What is inside a file?
A file is a saved collection of information. Choose one to look inside.
The units in this lesson
Use B, KB, MB, GB and TB to describe file sizes. Tap each unit to compare it.
Make your file grow
Predict first: which will add more โ a text note, a photo, or a video?
Build a multimedia project
Your project uses
This phone has lots of room!
More content usually needs more space. Image quality, video quality, and compression also change file size.
Can you fit it?
Your pretend phone holds 2 GB. Add the lesson files and watch its storage fill.
Space used
This phone is empty and ready!
Try fitting a video, a song, and some photos.
Teacher notes & model details
Ask learners to predict, test, and explain. Compare a fileโs name, extension, type, unit and example size. Extensions give clues about format; changing an extension does not convert the file.
The activity uses the supplied lesson examples: text note 100 B, photo 600 KB, song 5 MB, video 1 GB and game 1 TB. These are teaching examples, not fixed sizes for every file of that type. Actual sizes depend on format, content, quality and compression.
This activity uses decimal units: 1 KB = 1,000 B; 1 MB = 1,000 KB; 1 GB = 1,000 MB; 1 TB = 1,000 GB. The learner unit focus is B, KB, MB, GB and TB. The 2 GB storage model lets learners test combinations that include the 1 GB video.
